BACK TO BASICS: A FRESH APPROACH
The phrase “back to basics” is most often heard in relation to education. Much research has been published and much has been written over the years about the effectiveness of getting back to a “traditional” education system that focuses on reading, writing, mathematics and science. These things are said to put the focus back on the traditional skills needed by all students in order for them to become competent workers and successful adults.
The concept of “Basic” also conjures up images for classic toys such as red wagons, Lincoln logs and a “jack in the box” (the original toy, not the fast food chain J). A lifestyle of voluntary simplicity can be seen as an effort to “get back to basics” by living in adobe homesteads and tending organic gardens.
So, what does a phrase like “back to basics” mean for all of us as business people in today's economic and social environment?
I think it's a call for us to remember what is truly important. Like taking pride in creating a quality product at a fair price. Or, providing a necessary service with a true focus on the customer. Or maybe it's a reminder that our organizations are made up of vulnerable people who are experiencing the same stress and uncertainty that we are.
As I reflect on this concept of ”basic”, I think back to all of the themes and ideas I have had the privilege to share with you through this Chairman's column. Together we have explored the concepts of leadership and milestones. We've focused on the roles of women in business and the business of manufacturing in our city. And in all things, we've worked to keep ourselves, our companies and our chamber viable while serving each other as resources for prosperity.
So, as I reflect on my year as chairman of the Corona Chamber of Commerce, I want to get back to a very basic emotion – gratitude. I am grateful for the opportunity you provided for me to serve in this way. I am grateful for my fellow Board members, the many volunteers that make up the multitude of committees and a very special appreciation to our President, Bobby Spiegel, and all the Chamber staff….who are absolutely the very best!
Ann Morrow Lindbergh once said “One can never pay in gratitude: one can only pay 'in kind' somewhere else in life.” I’m looking forward to the leadership of Kerry Pendergast as chairman and a great new year for all of Corona.
